135. What Does a Mom Look Like? [Podcast Swap - Mompreneur Guide Podcast]
Monday May 08, 2023
Monday May 08, 2023
In this podcast episode I was a guest on the Mompreneur Guide Podcast and we talked about what it means to us to be a mom. I think this is such a great interview to listen to as we prepare for mothers day this year and look back on what our relationships with our own mothers looked like and how that shapes the relationships we are building with our own children.
We dive in on what kind of mom are you and what kind of mom do you want to be? Are you aligned with those two questions? If not, what are a few things you can do to start doing today to truly be the mom you want to be.
We have the ability to shape generations. We can look at how our mothers mothered and from there pick and choose which parts we want to bring into the next generations and even start new traditions moving forward. If we’re open to the idea we can look back on our own childhood and see what we want them to remember and what kind of legacy we want to pass down and also discover new experiences along the way.
We also discuss how this is a joint effort and we have the ability to listen to our children’s desires and allow that to help create a blueprint for our family moving forward. We can start creating a vision for what that will look like and pivot and adjust as needed and we may not be there yet but we certainly have the ability to achieve those goals if we keep pursuing them.

In this podcast episode, we delve into the most common complication that can arise during pregnancy or after childbirth - postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS). May is Mental Health Awareness month, and we aim to break down the stigma, misinformation, and misunderstandings surrounding PMADS.
We discuss how it's common to project our feelings and interpretations onto others, leading to a "conspiracy of silence" when it comes to speaking out about our struggles. However, it's important to rely heavily on self-reporting, as the system isn't always set up to catch mental health issues.
We touch on the differences between baby blues, which typically subside within two weeks, and postpartum depression, which can manifest in various ways for different mothers. Under the umbrella of PMADS, it's crucial to recognize if we feel "off” to seek professional evaluation if necessary.
Often, symptoms of PMADS can be masked by the significant identity shift that comes with motherhood. However, if we don't take the time to heal ourselves and work through these issues, it can have a lasting impact on not just us but our children and future generations as well. Tune in to learn what to look for, what to do, and who to ask for help when it comes to postpartum mental health.

April is Cesarean Awareness Month and in this episode we talk with the host of the Birth Trauma Stories podcast, which is a place that holds space and sheds light on perinatal trauma, Cathy Garrett. She shares her experience with AFE (amniotic fluid embolism), stroke, and postpartum endometritis. From having a cesarean with her first, attempting a VBAC for her second, and ultimately experience another cesarean along with need need for a hysterectomy she has faced many birthing situations from her 2 births.
After her second birth, she found herself in a coma for 9 days and over the course of that time she went through 6 surgeries. We explore her perspective and how she has become an advocate in this much needed space. If you are willing and open to this conversation I invite you to listen in and hear how this has shaped her life and opened up her awareness to these rare conditions that need to become more of a priority and talked about more in the motherhood community.
